This post is about my time coaching NVRC in the fall of 2013 at Sandy Run Boathouse Fairfax Station, VA.
NVRC, Fairfax Station, VA August 2013-November 2013
Head Boys Coach and Novice Coach
- The Director of WT Woodson was also the women’s coach of NVRC in the fall and hired me to be the boys head coach and novice coach
- NVRC was a club team for high school rowers from Northern Virginia teams during the summer and fall that ran from approximately 2001 or 2002 to 2013. High school teams in Virginia can not compete with their respective high schools during the summer and fall
- The hiring took place when a break away program opened up when a majority of previous NVRC athletes transitioned to the new club, Resilient Rowing
- Took a small group of mixed gender athletes on the water 5 days a week and focused on racing and technical aspects of the stroke
- Brought novice athletes up to the level of their varsity peers in a matter of weeks by focusing on technical proficiency in small boats and fitness
- Trained the athletes for 3 fall head races on the Occoquan
- Used the rowing machine to build fitness and run erg testing
- Athletes would go on to make their teams first and 2nd varsities in the spring
- The pay rate was $25 an hour
