This post is about my brief 5 month stint at Langley High School Crew, which is located in McLean, VA. The team trained out of the high school during the winter and out of the Sandy Run Boathouse in Fairfax Station, VA.
Langley High School Crew, McLean, VA September 2012-March 2013
Head Freshmen Boys and Varsity Boys Head Coach
- Hired by the director and Varsity Boys Head Coach, and at-large board member in September of 2012 at a rate of $1000 a month as the freshmen boys coach
- Implemented an aggressive winter training plan at the school in November
- Was recognized by the varsity coach that I should take over as the whole boys teams coach with the director helping to manage the athletes in December. Negotiated a raise to $1200 a month.
- Won the annual Langley vs West Springfield indoor 20 min championship
- Built fitness and enthusiasm from the athletes throughout the winter
- Dedicated time to ensuring the fleet was prepared for the spring season by running boathouse workdays
- Implemented the first rendition of “Stotesbury-in-two-days” where the athletes would complete a 2K time trial, which would determine lane assignments for 2K semis that same day, and a round of finals the next day
- Was relieved of duties by the “at-large board member” and 2 other board members because of complaints from a teacher in the school of my enthusiasm in the middle of March. None of the other 7 board members were consulted about the dismissal. A request was made for an appeal afterword and was denied. The team would go on to win the Varsity 4+ and Junior 8+ at VASRAs
- 1 of the freshmen athletes at the time ended up getting recruited to row for the UPENN lightweights and won the Eastern Sprints in 2019 in the Varsity 8+. The first championship for the team in 50 years.
