Joe’s Time at WT Woodson as the Freshmen Boys Coach

This post is about my brief stint at WT Woodson High School, which is located in Fairfax County, VA. The team trains out of the school in the winter and out of the Sandy Run Boathouse in Fairfax Station, VA in the spring.

WT Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA November 2013-May 2014

Head Freshmen Boys High School Rowing Coach

  • Hired during the summer of 2013 by the director of rowing
  • Taught 20 novice and freshmen boys how to row and how to compete in starting in November of 2013
  • Coached them to a top 20 finish at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in 2014
  • Coached the freshmen 8+ to a 4th place finish at the VASRA Championship
  • Also Coached the 3rd Varsity 8+ to a 3rd place finish at the VASRA Championship
  • Created and implemented a winter training plan that developed inexperienced athletes
  • Mentored under legendary coach Todd Jesdale for a year, who was the WT Woodson Varsity Boys Rowing Coach. The varsity 8+ would go on to place 2nd at the VASRA championship and be the fastest crew in Virginia and place 11th at the SRAA National Championship
  • Left Woodson to take on the roll of Head Freshmen Boys High School Rowing Coach at Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School Crew
