This post is about my 4 year stint at Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School Crew, which is located in Bethesda, MD. The team trained out of the Washington Sports Club in Bethesda in the winter and out of the Thompson Boat Center in the Fall and spring.
Bethesda Chevy Chase Crew, Bethesda, MD September 2014-May 2018
Head Freshmen Boys High School Rowing Coach
- Hired during the summer of 2014. Had multiple interviews with the President of the Board and the Director of the team. This was intentionally done by the director of rowing. Was ultimately paid $600 a month, every other month. A low amount for coaches at the time. I elected to prove myself
- Taught over 100 freshman high school novice boys in the span of 4 years how to row and compete in the fall and become viable varsity athletes when entering their sophomore year
- Coached the 2017 Freshmen Boys 8+ to a Championship at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta
- Coached 3 Freshmen Boys 8+s to Grand Finals at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta from 2016 to 2018
- With the help of the varsity crews, oversaw the sweep of the 2017 Washington Metro Interscholastic Rowing Association (WMIRA), boys team points trophy champion, and the head coach named Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year
- Coached 3 freshmen crews to WMIRA championships
- Coached 3 freshmen crews to Maryland State Championships
- Oversaw high school varsity rower recruitment to college programs like Harvard, Yale, Brown, and Drexel
- Mentored under legendary coach Todd Jesdale for 4 more years, who has won Eastern Sprints and IRA titles with Cornell University, and won the Henley Royal Regatta with Shrewsbury School. Todd helped hire me at B-CC after he left WT Woodson to be the coaching consultant/coaches coach
- Developed and implemented an acme intersquad championship for the indoor season in February of every year. The Championship was aptly named CRASH BCCs with the format being a time trial 2K, heats of 6, and finals over the course of 2 days.
- Mentored 3 freshmen assistant coaches who would go on to become freshmen coaches, varsity assistant coaches, and head coaches in their own right.
- Ran the middle school recruiting effort at the local middle school by doing video presentations, demonstrations on the rowing machine, and rowing machine sprint races. Incoming freshmen recruitment increased 2 fold over 3 years.
- Developed and implemented 3 distinct seasons of training with the fall focused on development, teamwork, and learning. A winter season dedicated to fitness. And, a spring season dedicated to racing and learning how to compete as a unit
